TCFV is thrilled to invite you to 2019's Region 2 Meeting. Join us and fellow advocates, program administrators, and community members from all over West Texas for a full day of training on Thursday, June 13, 2019 in Alpine, Texas. 


This annual meeting is a chance to learn, generate creative ideas for work in your community, and build relationships with colleagues in the field and intersecting fields.


Training Topic: “Responding to Strangulation and Trial Preparation: What Law Enforcement and Healthcare Need to Know”

The first half of this presentation will cover the difference between strangulation and choking, the different types of strangulation, why strangulation is missed and misunderstood, the law, landmark (and current) literature, and associated lethality with IPV.


The second half of the presentation will cover underlying neck anatomy, mechanisms that interfere with impeded air and blood flow, subjective and objective signs of strangulation, lethal injuries, forensic nursing role, LE role, advocacy role, and trial preparation.



Dana Oldham has been a registered nurse for 20 years. She began her nursing career as an emergency room nurse and transitioned to forensic nursing in 2008. She has spent the last ten years of her career giving comprehensive care to patients with complaints of interpersonal violence. She has provided care for over 1400 patients as a forensic nurse examiner and has testified multiple times as an expert on sexual assault and strangulation. She anticipates graduating with her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in March of 2020.


Tiffani Dusang is a Board Certified Advanced Forensic Nurse Examiner who currently serves as Board President, Educator and Consultant for Texas Forensic Nurse Examiners (TXFNE) Center for Forensic Excellence. Tiffani is the Administrative Director of Nursing for the Emergency Department, Observation, Hemodialysis and Special Procedures for Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital. As a Registered Nurse for the last 25 years, Tiffani has concentrated the majority of her practice in Emergency/Trauma Nursing and Forensic Nursing. As a Forensic Nurse Examiner for 15 years, Tiffani provides care to victims of interpersonal violence, participates in the training of forensic nurses and has helped facilitate an improved standard of care for victims of sexual assault and interpersonal violence throughout Houston and surrounding counties. Furthermore, she provides comprehensive education on the medical/forensic exam process and forensic evidence recognition, collection and preservation for medical professionals and forensic nursing programs. Throughout the state of Texas, Tiffani currently provides comprehensive education on strangulation for medical colleagues, attorneys and local law enforcement agencies. In addition, she provides expert witness consultation and testimony in the area of strangulation, smothering, domestic violence and sexual assault for local Texas counties.
















We will offer 5.0 SW, LPC, LMFT, and Texas CJAD BIPP Hours CEU hours for this training.
